The Stair Climb Test: Timing a Flight You Already Own
The short answer
Pick one flight of stairs you climb most days, time yourself going up it at a brisk but ordinary pace, and write down which staircase it was. Stairs ask your legs for force and speed together, which is why a stair time tends to move before a slow seated test does. There is no table to look yours up in — your staircase has its own step height, count and turn — so the comparison is against your own time on the same flight. Every two to three months is often enough.

The thirty-second sit-to-stand

How to time it
Choose one flight and commit to it — the same stairs every time, counted once and written down, because a ten-step flight and a fourteen-step flight are different tests. Note whether there is a turn or a landing partway, since that changes the pace as much as the step count does. Start with both feet on the floor at the bottom and stop the clock when both feet are on the top landing.
Go at a brisk but genuinely ordinary pace — the pace you would use carrying nothing, in a mild hurry. Not a sprint, and not two steps at a time. Keep a hand near the rail whether or not you use it, and use it properly if that is what you normally do; what matters is that you do the same thing next time. Record the flight, the shoes, the time of day, and whether you had trained that day.
Why stairs notice things first
Climbing is one of the few things in an ordinary day that asks your legs to produce force quickly against your own body weight, one leg at a time. A chair rise is slower and shares the work between both legs; a four-metre walk barely loads them at all. Stairs combine load, speed and single-leg control, which is why they tend to register a change earlier than the gentler measures do.
It is also the everyday task people volunteer without being asked. Nobody says they have noticed their gait speed. Plenty of people say the stairs feel different, and they are usually right — this just puts a number and a date on the thing you already noticed, so it becomes a record rather than an impression.
Why no published table applies to your staircase
Step height, step depth, flight length, whether there is a half-landing, how open the stairwell is, the handrail, the carpet: all of it changes the time, and none of it is standardised in a home. Laboratory stair tests control every one of those variables and then report times that mean something within that setup. Yours will not be comparable to them, and it does not need to be.
So do not look for a target, and be wary of any page that offers you one. The number is only ever meaningful against the same flight, the same shoes, the same you, some months apart. That is a genuine limitation and also the reason the test is worth doing at all: your staircase is the one course you will actually keep re-running.
What actually moves the number
The two levers are the same as everywhere else in this cluster, and there is nothing clever about them. During weight loss, combining a reduced-calorie diet with adequate protein and more physical activity, especially resistance exercise, helps maintain muscle mass and improve muscle strength and physical function. That is the whole mechanism worth knowing, and it is why a stair time and a protein target belong on the same page.
For the training half, public-health guidance recommends muscle-strengthening activities at moderate or greater intensity, involving all major muscle groups, on two or more days a week — the same recommendation for adults and for people aged 65 and over. The movements that show up on a staircase specifically are the single-leg ones: step-ups, split squats, and squats to a chair done without a hand down. Train those and the flight looks after itself.
When the stairs are telling you something else
A stair time is a leg measurement, but stairs also ask a lot of your breathing and your heart, and those can be what has changed. Being winded at the top is a different observation from your legs feeling heavy, and the two are worth writing down separately, because they point in different directions.
Some of it is past anything a home test should be adjudicating. New breathlessness, chest tightness or pain, an unusually pounding or irregular heartbeat, dizziness on the way up, or knee or hip pain that is sharp rather than tired: stop, and take it to your healthcare provider rather than retesting. The same goes for a time that keeps drifting the wrong way over several months while your protein and training have genuinely held — bring the dated list of times with you.
