The Wall Sit Test: Leg Endurance You Can Time Against a Wall

The short answer

Slide down a wall until your thighs are as close to parallel with the floor as you can comfortably manage, and time how long you hold the position before your hips creep up or your form goes. It needs a wall, a timer and about a minute, and it answers a different question from the chair-rise test: not how quickly your legs can produce force, but how long they can keep holding it. There is no score we would hand you — the published numbers come from protocols stricter than anything you will replicate in a hallway — so the benchmark is your own result a few months ago, measured the same way. The thirty-second sit-to-stand

Sit on a firm chair, arms crossed over your chest. Stand fully and sit back down as many times as you comfortably can in thirty seconds. Tap the counter each time you stand. Stop early if anything hurts — an incomplete test tells you more than an injury does.

The chair test measures how fast you can stand up. This one measures how long you can stay put under load, which is the half of leg strength you notice in a queue, on a hill, or halfway up a flight of stairs with shopping in both hands.

How to hold it the same way every time

Stand with your back flat against a wall and walk your feet out about two of your own foot-lengths, hip-width apart. Slide down until your knees are bent toward a right angle and your thighs are as close to parallel with the floor as you can comfortably manage. Knees stay above your ankles rather than drifting past your toes, your whole back stays in contact with the wall, and your arms hang by your sides or fold across your chest — never resting on your thighs, which quietly takes load off the test.

Start the timer once you are settled in position, and stop it the moment your hips start creeping back up the wall, your back peels away, your knees fall inward, or you push off. Do one practice hold of a few seconds to find the position, rest a couple of minutes, then take a single timed attempt. More attempts on the same day tell you about fatigue, not about your legs.

Write down the depth you used, where your feet were, whether your arms were folded, the date and the time of day. Depth is the one that matters most here: a shallower angle is a much easier hold, so a test at a different depth is a different test rather than a comparison. If parallel is not available to you today, pick the depth you can hold with a flat back and use that same one every time.

Why endurance deserves its own test

Most of the checks in this cluster measure how much force you can produce, or how quickly. Grip is a brief maximal squeeze, the sit-to-stand test is repeated bursts against the clock, and the stair climb is power up a flight. None of them notices how long your legs can keep working once the burst is over, which is a real and separate quality — the one behind standing through a long queue, holding a half-squat while you lift a child, or carrying bags up a slope without stopping halfway.

It pairs naturally with the plank test, which does the same job for your trunk. One measures how long your legs can hold a position, the other how long your core can. Both are proxies and neither replaces the chair-rise or grip tests, which is why the at-home strength routine puts a set of them together rather than leaning on any single number.

Do it safely, and stop early rather than late

A wall sit is a static hold, and the reflex under a hard static effort is to hold your breath. Do not — breathe steadily in and out for the whole hold, and stop if you feel light-headed, if your chest feels tight, or if your knees start to complain rather than your thigh muscles burn. Put a sturdy chair beside you before you start so you have something to sit into, and test with somebody else in the house if you can.

If you have blood-pressure or heart concerns, or knee pain and existing joint problems, ask your healthcare provider whether timed isometric holds are appropriate for you before you use this test at all. That is a genuine question for them rather than a formality, and strength training with joint pain over 50 covers the training side of the same issue.

There is a GLP-1-specific reason to be picky about which day you test, too. Eating and drinking much less than you used to can leave you light-headed for reasons that have nothing to do with your legs, so a day when you already feel wobbly is a day to skip the test rather than push through it. Hydration and fatigue on a GLP-1 covers that side, and light-headedness that keeps happening belongs with your healthcare provider, not with a stopwatch.

What the number does and doesn’t tell you

We are not going to print a pass mark, and you should be sceptical of pages that do. Reference times for wall sits come from fitness batteries with a fixed knee angle, a fixed foot position and someone watching the depth, and a few degrees of difference in any of those changes the result far more than a few months of training will. A number you produced against your own kitchen wall is not that measurement, and it cannot tell you anything about your health.

What it can do is give you something comparable. Ninety seconds in May and fifty seconds in August, at the same depth and the same time of day, is a real difference and worth writing down for your healthcare provider — dates and numbers travel much better than an impression that your legs feel worse. A single bad result is usually noise: sleep, a hard session the day before, and how much you have eaten all move it.

The test also has a ceiling, and it arrives sooner than you would think. Past about two minutes you are mostly measuring your tolerance for discomfort rather than your legs, so if you get there comfortably, stop chasing the number. Move to a harder version — a slightly deeper hold, or holding something heavy against your chest — and treat that as a new baseline, recorded as a new test.

What actually moves it, and why bother on a GLP-1

The reason to keep an eye on leg function while the weight comes off is that some of what you lose is lean tissue rather than fat. Across 22 randomised trials in more than 2,200 people, lean mass accounted for roughly a quarter of the total weight lost on GLP-1 medications, though lean mass as a percentage of body weight was unchanged. A scale cannot see which part of that you are keeping. A timed hold, repeated under the same conditions, gets closer.

What moves the number is ordinary resistance training rather than practising wall sits. An overview of 137 systematic reviews covering more than 30,000 participants recommended progressive resistance training for healthy adults to improve muscle function, size and physical performance — and found that equipment type, exercise complexity and set structure did not consistently change training outcomes. That last part is the useful bit: squats to a chair in your kitchen are not a lesser version of the gym.

Protein is the other half, as everywhere else in this cluster, and the two together are what the evidence supports for holding onto muscle while you eat less. Test every two or three months rather than every week — the gap between tests is where the change actually happens.

Both are proxies for the same underlying thing and neither replaces the other, which is why the at-home routine uses a set of tests rather than one.

The general cautions apply to everybody: breathe throughout instead of holding your breath, keep a sturdy chair beside you, and stop at the first sign of light-headedness or knee pain rather than thigh burn.
