The Walking Speed Test: Four Metres and a Stopwatch

The short answer
Mark out four metres of clear floor, walk it at your ordinary everyday pace, and time it. Four divided by your time in seconds gives your walking speed in metres per second — one number that folds together leg strength, balance and coordination, which is why it turns up in clinical assessment so often. Walk it three times and keep the best. Then read it the way you read every test here: against your own result three months ago, not against a published table.
It sounds far too simple to measure anything. That’s exactly why it gets used — no equipment, twenty seconds, and it moves when something real has changed.
How to measure it properly
Find a straight, clear stretch of floor; a hallway is ideal. Mark a start and a finish four metres apart, then leave yourself a couple of metres before the start and after the finish, so you’re already up to speed as you cross the first mark and aren’t slowing down before the second. Tape, a shoe, a book — anything you can leave in place works as a marker, as long as it’s still there next time.
Walk at your usual everyday pace, not a demonstration pace. The instruction that matters is ‘walk the way you would to cross a room’, because almost everyone speeds up when they know they’re being timed. Start the clock as you cross the first mark, stop it at the second, do it three times with a rest between, and keep the best. Same shoes each time, your walking aid if you use one, and note which corridor you used.
Why one number for walking
Walking isn’t one system. Getting across a room at a decent pace asks for leg strength, balance, joint range, coordination and the willingness to push off — so a single time over four metres compresses several things you’d otherwise have to measure separately. That makes it a blunt instrument and a genuinely useful one at the same time.
It also has the property that matters most for a home test: it costs nothing and it repeats. You can measure it in your own hallway, in your own shoes, as often as you like, and what you’re measuring is close to what an assessor would measure. Very little else on this list is true of both.
About the published cut-points
You will find speeds quoted online below which someone is considered slow. We’re deliberately not printing one, for the same reason we don’t print a chair-rise threshold: the values vary by protocol and by population, and a self-timed walk down your own hallway isn’t the standardised measurement those numbers came from.
It also isn’t how thresholds like that get used. A European expert consensus gives reference cut-off points for low grip strength of about 27 kg for men and 16 kg for women, and positions them inside a staged assessment, where a low result prompts further evaluation rather than settling anything on its own. The same logic applies to a walking time. A number under a threshold is a reason to talk to your healthcare provider, never a conclusion you hand yourself.
Speed and muscle are not the same measurement
Worth holding onto before you read too much into one slow week: what a scan says about your tissue and what a clock says about your function can move independently. In a randomised trial in postmenopausal women, groups losing weight at very different rates lost different amounts of lean mass yet showed no difference in handgrip strength — the tissue number and the function number told different stories in the same people.
Walking speed also answers to plenty that has nothing to do with muscle. A sore knee, new shoes, a bad night’s sleep, a cold hallway, being in a rush or not — all of it lands in the same four-metre time. Which is the argument for repeating it under the same conditions and reading several tests rather than one.
What to do with your number
Log it with the date, the corridor, the shoes and roughly how you slept, and repeat every two or three months alongside your chair-rise time. Small differences are noise; a consistent drift across three tests under the same conditions is the thing to act on. When that happens, the first two places to look are whether your protein has slipped and whether resistance training is still actually happening.
If it keeps going the wrong way despite doing the work, take the written record to your healthcare provider. A dated list of times is far more useful to them than a memory of feeling slower — and that record is the part a home test can genuinely contribute.
