How Often Should You Weigh Yourself on a GLP-1?
The short answer
Either daily or weekly is defensible; what decides it is which one you can read without it running your mood. If you weigh daily, treat the individual number as noise and judge the weekly average. If daily readings pull you around, weekly or fortnightly loses you almost nothing, because a single reading was never the signal anyway. What no frequency can fix is what the scale measures: one figure blending fat, muscle, water and last night's dinner.

Why this one is useful if you lift. NICE states these classifications can be used for adults of both sexes and all ethnicities with a BMI under 35 — explicitly including adults with high muscle mass. That’s the gap BMI leaves: muscle inflates BMI, but it doesn’t inflate your waist.
A rough guide for planning, not medical advice or a diagnosis — NICE itself notes the ratio should be interpreted with caution because it isn’t a direct measure of central adiposity. Tape measurement also carries real error, so measure the same way each time and watch the trend rather than one reading. Anything about what this means for you belongs with your healthcare provider.
The question is usually asked as though there is a correct interval. There is not — there is a trade-off between how quickly you can see a trend and how much noise you have to sit with to get it.
Why the number jumps around
Day-to-day weight is mostly not fat arriving or leaving. It is food and fluid still in transit, salt, glycogen and the water stored alongside it, and where you are in your week. In a study of free-living adults, around 84% of the small average weight change measured over two weeks was fat-free mass rather than fat — over short windows the scale is largely tracking water and gut contents.
That is the whole case against reading a single number. A 700-gram jump overnight is not 700 grams of tissue; it is a rounding error with a decimal point. Judged one reading at a time, the scale will hand you a story roughly every other day, and most of those stories are false.
Pick a cadence you can actually read
Daily weighing works well if — and only if — you use it the way a statistician would: same conditions every time, first thing in the morning after the toilet, before eating or drinking, and then averaged across the week. Seven noisy readings averaged are a better estimate than one, which is the honest argument for daily.
Weekly weighing works too, and asks less of you. The cost is that a single weekly reading carries all the noise of whichever morning you picked, so a trend takes longer to become visible. Either way the rule is the same: same scale, same conditions, and read the line across four to six weeks rather than the gap between this reading and the last.
What the scale cannot tell you at any frequency
Weighing more often gets you a better estimate of one number. It does not get you a different number. Weight cannot separate fat from muscle from water, which is exactly the distinction that matters while you are losing weight on a GLP-1 — so weighing daily instead of weekly answers the wrong question with more precision.
This is why the measurement people trust most is not taken alone. An international expert consensus recommends measuring waist circumference routinely alongside weight, noting weight by itself is not sufficient to characterise health risk. Add the one thing neither can see — what you can lift, week to week — and you have a picture that a scale on its own will never give you.
When to weigh less often, or not at all
If the number sets the tone of your day, that is a reason to change the frequency, not a character flaw. Weighing weekly, fortnightly, or handing the scale to someone else for a month costs you very little information and can be worth a great deal. Tape measurements and a strength log will keep you oriented in the meantime.
Some of this is not a tracking question at all. If weighing has become compulsive, if you are avoiding food to move the number, or if you are unsure whether your rate of loss is where it should be, that is a conversation for your healthcare provider — those are not things a better weighing schedule fixes.
