A realistic timeline
Weeks one to four: nothing interpretable. Whatever you see is water, food, and measurement error in some combination. Measure if you want a baseline, but don’t read it as progress or as a problem.
Around two to three months: the first point where a trend is worth looking at, assuming you kept the method and the conditions identical throughout. Three to six months: enough readings sloping the same way to call it a direction. Slower than the internet implies, and it moves further out if you’re using a higher-error method or losing weight gradually — which, for holding onto muscle, is not a bad thing.
What moves faster than the scan
Strength is the high-frequency signal. Reps at a given load, or the load itself, on two or three movements — it changes on a scale of weeks, it has no meaningful error bar, and early on it can improve substantially through better coordination before any tissue has changed. That’s genuine, useful feedback in the window where every measurement is still noise.
Clothes are the other honest early indicator, and a tape measure at a fixed spot sits somewhere in between. None of these tell you your body-fat percentage. All of them tell you something true, weeks before a scan is able to.
When the timeline isn’t the question
If the reason you’re measuring is worry rather than curiosity — you think you’re losing weight faster than you should be, or something in a result concerned you — waiting three months for a trend isn’t the answer to that. Take it to your healthcare provider, along with any question about your medication, your symptoms, or whether you should be having scans at all.
And keep the purpose straight while you wait. You’re checking that you’re holding onto muscle while the weight comes down. That’s a question your training log starts answering this month, not one you need a scan to open.
