What the Other Numbers on Your Smart Scale Mean
The short answer
Your scale prints six or eight numbers and measured exactly one thing: how easily a small current passed through you. From that it estimates your total body water, and every other figure on the display — muscle mass, bone mass, BMR, metabolic age, visceral fat rating — is that single estimate pushed through built-in equations. They are not independent readings, which is why they rise and fall together, and why a litre of water can move several of them at once. A couple are worth watching as a trend. One of them, metabolic age, is not a measurement at all.

Why this one is useful if you lift. NICE states these classifications can be used for adults of both sexes and all ethnicities with a BMI under 35 — explicitly including adults with high muscle mass. That’s the gap BMI leaves: muscle inflates BMI, but it doesn’t inflate your waist.
A rough guide for planning, not medical advice or a diagnosis — NICE itself notes the ratio should be interpreted with caution because it isn’t a direct measure of central adiposity. Tape measurement also carries real error, so measure the same way each time and watch the trend rather than one reading. Anything about what this means for you belongs with your healthcare provider.
Most people buy the scale for the body-fat number and then wonder what the rest of the display is telling them. Here’s where each figure actually comes from, in plain terms, and which ones deserve any of your attention.
One measurement, many numbers
Bioelectrical impedance sends a small current through you and measures the resistance. Because water conducts well and fat doesn’t, the device can estimate your total body water — and from that, using equations built into the firmware, it derives fat-free mass, and then everything else.
This is the sentence worth keeping: bioelectrical impedance determines fat-free mass and total body water in people without significant fluid and electrolyte abnormalities, and official guidance notes that its use in altered hydration states needs further research. Body water and fat-free mass are what the technique is for. The rest of the display is arithmetic performed on those two.
That’s why the numbers aren’t independent evidence. If the water estimate is off, everything downstream of it is off in the same direction at the same time. Seeing five numbers agree with each other feels like corroboration and isn’t — they all came from one measurement.
Going through them one at a time
Body water percentage is the closest thing on the display to what the device actually estimates. It still isn’t precise, and normal ranges are wide enough that most readings are unremarkable, but it’s the least derived figure there.
Muscle mass is derived from fat-free mass — and fat-free mass is not muscle. It’s roughly 74% water, 19% protein and 6.5% mineral, and includes organs, blood and connective tissue. A scale reporting ‘muscle mass’ to the tenth of a kilogram is presenting an estimate built on an estimate. The lean-mass guide covers this distinction properly.
Bone mass is a small derived fraction of fat-free mass, usually a couple of kilos, and essentially fixed on the timescales you’re watching. It is not a bone-density reading — that’s a different scan of specific sites, and the bone-density guide explains what one involves. If your bones are the actual concern, this figure isn’t the one to consult.
BMR is usually not measured at all. Most devices put your weight, height, age and sex into a published equation. Two people at the same weight get the same answer regardless of how different their metabolisms are, and the number changes when your weight does because the formula says so.
Metabolic age has no agreed definition, no standard behind it and no way to check it. It’s a marketing presentation of your BMR compared against an average for other ages. A number telling you that you are ‘48’ when you are 39 is not a finding about your health; it’s a restatement of your weight in a more upsetting format. This is the one figure on the display worth ignoring outright.
The visceral fat rating is an index on the manufacturer’s own scale, not a measurement in any unit you could compare to anything. The practical proxy for visceral fat is a tape measure around your waist, which the visceral-fat guide goes into.
Why they all move together
Because they share a denominator. Food and fluid genuinely move the underlying estimate: in a controlled study, consuming a 500 g meal with a litre of water shifted an impedance fat-mass estimate by around 1.4 kg and a scan’s fat-free mass reading by over 1.2 kg.
So drink a large glass of water and step back on, and your ‘muscle mass’ may well have gone up — not because anything happened to your muscle, but because you are more conductive than you were ten minutes ago. The same mechanism runs in reverse on a day when you’ve drunk less, which is worth knowing on a GLP-1, where drinking less is common.
This is the single most useful thing to understand about the display: it responds to your last drink faster than it responds to six weeks of training.
Which ones are worth anything
Two rules cover it. First, use one number, not six — pick the body-fat trend or the fat-free mass trend and follow that one, because watching all of them just gives you more chances to be alarmed by the same measurement wearing different hats.
Second, standardise ruthlessly and read months rather than days: same time of day, first thing, after the toilet, before food or drink, not straight after training or a hot bath. Then put something beside it that isn’t made of conductivity — a waist measurement, and what you’re lifting. Those two answer the question people are really asking the scale.
When to take it to your healthcare provider
None of these figures is a health assessment, and the bone-mass line in particular should not be read as information about your bone health — if that’s a live concern for you, or you have risk factors for bone loss, it’s a conversation with your healthcare provider about whether a proper scan is appropriate.
Same for anything else the display seems to be telling you. If you feel weaker in ordinary tasks, if you’re losing weight faster than you or your provider expected, or if something has changed that worries you, that belongs with them rather than with a device that estimated all of it from how easily a current crossed your foot.

Since the BMR estimate is usually just an equation using your weight, height, age and sex, metabolic age mostly restates your weight in a form designed to provoke. It’s the one number on the display worth ignoring.
Does my scale really measure bone mass?+
No. It reports a small derived fraction of fat-free mass, typically a couple of kilos, and it barely moves. It is not a bone-density reading — bone density is measured by a scan of specific sites such as the hip and spine. If your bone health is a genuine concern, that’s a question for your healthcare provider rather than something to read off a bathroom scale.
